Last night, John McCain was scheduled to appear on the Late Show. That, of course, did not happen due to McCain’s decision to suspend his campaign in order to focus on resolving the crisis on Wall Street.

Sitting in my apartment, I watched as David Letterman reacted to the news and the absence of his scheduled guest. Despite the interjections of comedy in the monologue, it was clear that Letterman was serious about what he was saying. And while he was critical of the campaign’s descision, he also made clear his regard for McCain as a man.

The video is available on YouTube, and is worth watching, especially at 0:53 into the clip.

The most interesting part is when Letterman states:

Here’s what you if you’re running a campaign in the middle of an economic crisis… You’re a senator, a fourth term senator from Arizona. You go back to Washington. You handle what you need to handle. Don’t suspend your campaign. You let your campaign go on, shouldered by your vice presidential nominee. That’s what you do. You don’t quit. Or is that really, is that really a good thing to do? See what I’m saying?

It is clear that Sarah Palin is being sheltered from the media, appearing rarely and only under controlled situations. Furthermore, its been suggested that the suspension of the campaign and possible postponement of the first presidential debate is really just an effort to postpone the vice presidential debate, in an attempt to allow more time to prepare Palin for the questions she will be receiving.

I see what Letterman is saying. I’ll be following up this post with others of a political nature. You’ve been warned.
